Hey all! I'm going to be attempting the lvl 20 avatar battles in a few days... I was wondering if some of you could help me decide how to do them. I am considering going in as a smn/rdm - for some extra defense power, offensive and defensive spells. Against Ifrit and Ramuh (water and earth weaknesses, respectively) I'll have the elemental spells Water and Stone. I may try a blm sub against Titan so I have Aero. Smn/whm just doesnt seem like as great an idea, because I still only have Cure (II is lvl 11 ) and less hp. I'm not worried about mp as much, because I will be running totally dry on mana, and shall bring some juices (pineapple, most likely). I'll ask more about strategy with Astral Flow and such later… for now, I just need to decide on a subjob.

A friend of mine tried to take on shiva SMN/RDM had food and still lost. Possible suggestions would be to bring plenty of juices and/or ether and some potions.... Oh and you may want to bring a whm friend who has the appropriate bar spell... Good luck!

You can only solo it, but who's to say a whm can't drop the spell on you and disband immediately before you begin? I've never done the fight but I've heard of this, so I can't guarantee it works...

Yah, the battles are solo. But Selk is right too, I had planned to enlist a whm for the bar-ele-ra spells, regen (II if I could), haste, Protect II and Shell II. Maybe a rdm as well for a slap of refresh before I go in. I just hope they all stay applied as they do for BCNM,dragon battles and such. As a smn/rdm, I'll have my own barwater and barstone to reapply if the -ra wears off (the higher level whm will have a stronger bar- spell, so I'll still use theirs) Selk, you also mentioned food... what do you all suggest type of food I should bring? I'm glad that juices add refresh, and dont take up the one-food-at-a-time rule.
Back to the original question, though... would a whm or blm sub offer anything that could help me better than a rdm sub?

I wouldnt' suggest BLM at all since you cannot cure, so it falls to either WHM or RDM... at lv20 I'm not sure if it'd make too much of a diff in regards to spells but the added def for RDM should surely be the deciding factor...
Perhaps some food that raises Attack or Defense... as a taru you'll want both... with RDM subbed you get the Def bonus so possibly go for some Atk bonus?

Another question... what weapon would you recommend for these fights? A dagger or hammer for fast damage dealing, a staff for hard hitting (albeit slow), or a wand for stat improvements (I was thinking the Hermit's Wand: mnd+2 int +2 and spell interruption rate -20%)?

I'm no summoner (well I am but not..) but I've read that in order to do these battles you need food, potions, ethers, and maybe an icarus wing. Have your little buncle attack the avatar and when he's almost kicked the bucket use Astral Flow and use his special attack, the prime avatar will kill poor little electric squirrel and go after you (this is when potions and ethers are handy). Have mp ready to re-summon carby while astral flow is still enabled and hit it with a special attack again. At this point I have no idea what you should do, weapon skill... dunno. Yagudo drink? I dunno, MP ain't my thing. Definitely get as buffed up as you can before the fight. BRD/WHM or something like that.

Yeah, ethers will be a must, because using the bloodpact Astral Flow gives Carby (Searing Light - AoE) uses all of your mp. I was just curious if anyone knew if Searing Light's damage is varied by how much mp you have left… Should I save the pact for when I have next to no mp left, then use a juice until I have enough to summon and use the pact again? and can I use the pact that soon? Pacts have a re-use timer of 60 seconds, does that reset if the avatar is dismissed? And if not, how long does Astral Flow actually last, to be able to use Searing Light more than once?
Bring a brd along, I didn't think of that... maybe Lukas will be lvl 25 by then, and have Mage's Ballad ;D
Whats an Icarus Wing?

Astral Flow lasts for 3 minutes.
Searing Light's damage is not varied by the amt. of MP left.
I'm not sure about the blood pact things as I haven't got to play with SMN much yet.
Icarus wing gives you 100tp immediately.

I found a great 'plan-of-attack' on KillingIfrit.com ...and I was bored last night... so I gave Shiva an attempt. ...and she was kind enough to send me back to my Home Point as fast as possible. lol I stood in front of the crystal, ate my boiled crab, and cast protect on myself... rested to full. Went into the battlefield, and ran up to shiva, cast Carby - the nuclear mink auto-attacks, so I dont have to sic him - a time-saver. after a hit or two, I used Astral Flow, and Searing Light right after... 45dmg Ran back and forth a few times, carby died before I could get away the third time, and shiva kept interrupting my casts... I died soon thereafter. I learned a few lessons, and will be prepared for next time: 1- Cast Aquaveil before going in! 2- Cast Dia before using Searing Light! (it lowers defense) 3- Wait until level 20! (I was only 18 ) 4- Max out Summoning Magic Skill first! (45 is crap!) Hopefully I will be ready to try again (and get my revenge!) soon! Having something like Refresh or Mage's Ballad cast on me beforehand would save me tons of gil on Yagudo Drinks too. Anyone know of a juice that adds mp at 3 per tick?

Theres no juice that gives 3 per tick, but if you use pineapple juice...carby is free to have out. So, use a juice...let him wear the avatar down a bit.....use Astral Flow and searing light (the juice will keep you at full MP so it will be most effective) then pop a high ether, resummon the ferret, and blast him again
